All hand-tufted and hand-woven rugs are made by craftsmen / women who are highly skilled in producing the very best in luxurious floor coverings. The manufacturing processes follow age-old traditions which are in fact perfectly compatible with the concerns of today when it is increasingly important to work in a manner which is both eco-friendly and environmentally responsible.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF RUGS

Hand-tufted rugs – made with a hand-held machine. The machine creates stitches by inserting yarn through loosely woven cloth and then an additional backing secures the finished piece. This process means the rugs are not reversible. Hand-tufting offers the possibility of “sculpting / carving” the yarn (cut pile only) to create amazing 3-dimensional surfaces; a textured pattern on a plain rug or simply to highlight or define aspects of the design or colour.

Hand-knotted rugs – Considered as the finest quality rugs, where the density of the knots dictates the quality of the finished piece. Physically demanding and time-consuming these rugs take a considerable time to produce, but are well worth the wait. An excellent choice for designs which are complex and/or incorporate colour palettes with a combination of subtle hues.

Indian Hand-woven rugs or Tibetan Knotting is a form of weaving where the yarn is looped very tightly around a weaving rod and horizontally passed through the warp threads of the loom. Before the rod is removed the loops can be cut along the length of the rod to create a cut pile surface. The other option is to leave the yarn uncut as a tightly formed loop pile. The rod is then used again to the repeat the action.

The choice of materials and the construction of each rug generally depends on the intended use, comfort and design element.

TEXTURE

Pile refers to the density, height and the surface texture of the yarn.

  • Dense – firm and durable; suitable for all kinds of residential or contract interior spaces where there is heavy use.
  • Medium – perfect for residential areas; offering a slightly softer feel underfoot. Excellent density for blending yarns

Loop pile has a firmer, textured surface. As the name implies, loops of yarn make up the surface texture.

Cut pile offers a plush, smooth velvety appearance. It is perfect for varying pile heights or hand carving which creates 3 dimensional, defined areas to enhance design or create depth.

FIBRES / MATERIALS

Linen is light and fresh. It offers a contemporary alternative to the heavier quality of pure wool and also offers a surface texture which is excellent underfoot in warm climates. In most cases cut pile heights are from 12mm – 20mm and loop pile heights are 14mm.

100% Pure Wool is possibly one of the oldest fibres known to man and not only remains the first choice for many because of its appearance, warmth, and flame-resistant properties but also its durability and sustainability. In most cases cut pile heights are 12mm and loop pile heights are 10mm.

65% Wool and 35% Linen combination.
This mix offers a rich depth of colour which can appear changeable depending on the angle of light. In most cases these rugs are 15mm pile.

Mecha Wool is extra thick yarn for producing sumptuous rugs with a deep pile making them very soft, warm and cosy. They have a natural look and feel with the texture of an irregular surface. Manufactured in 20mm pile.

50% Wool & 50% Silk in combination provide a luxurious, natural lustre and an exquisite softness underfoot. These rugs are slightly firmer underfoot that Silky Wool. Produced in 12mm pile

Silky wool – this is a combination of 45% Tencel & 55% Wool in 12mm pile. Tencel is in fact a plant based fibre which offers the most wonderful shine and softness, whilst the Wool provides strength and resilience.
