Care Instructions

Care instructions to maintain the beauty and prolong the life of your rugs. A few simple steps can ensure hand-made rugs and carpets last a lifetime .

Hand-tufted & hand knotted rugs

  • When you first receive your rug it is important that you remove the packaging as soon as possible and unroll it. If necessary, place something flat and reasonably heavy to correct any curling that may have occurred during transit.
  • Flattening of the pile can occur during transit or if/when you leave the rug rolled up in storage for a period of time. This generally rectifies itself with general use and/ or a light vacuuming.
  • On occasion the backing material of a hand-tufted rug may release a slight odour but this will disappear very quickly.
  • Please be aware that any furniture or other heavy objects left on the rug over time should have coasters to distribute weight more evenly. It is advisable to shift the position of any furniture from time to time, however slightly, just to prevent pressure points from permanently flattened the pile.
  • Fibres may shed when new. Do not brush, only vacuum with very light suction. Please cut, rather than pull extending fibres from rug.

Hand-woven / Flat-weave rugs

  • Hand-woven and Flat-weave rugs are reversible / double sided and durable if treated well.
  • If the rug is placed in strong sunlight, rotate occasionally and consider turning it over from time to time to limit any fading that might occur.
  • Depending on the surface of the floor non-slip mats under the rug are an option. As well as preventing the rug from sliding, they can also make the rug feel thicker and softer.

Cleaning for all rugs

  • Because rugs are underfoot it is easy for dirt and dust to accumulate. Vacuum lightly with a plain attachment – no brush or rotation device should be used.
  • In the event liquids are spilled on the rug, the affected area should be blotted with a dry cloth as soon as possible to prevent staining. Do not rub the area and be careful not to saturate with water. Absorb any residue with a dry cloth or plain kitchen paper.
  • If the rug is stained, apply a small amount of mild soap and cold water with a clean cloth. Dry by blotting up excess liquid and be careful to remove as much of the soap as possible. Remaining soap residue can stiffen the fibres and also work as a magnet for more dirt in the future.
  • If your rug becomes excessively damp then lay the rug completely flat to avoid distortions during drying. Depending on the degree of moisture, placing absorbant paper or a towel under the rug can help in the drying process. Keep the rug out of direct sunlight, in a well-ventilated area, until completely dry
  • Professional cleaning services are recommended for heavy dirt and stubborn stains.
